Well, I finally started putting the pieces of the puzzle together and things started to REALLY CLICK!
In 1984 I harvested my first whitetail buck! Man was I EXCITED!
....it was a small 4 point, but you would have thought I had taken a new WORLD RECORD! From that point I just kept learning and kept having more and more SUCCESS. To date, I have taken 37 bucks and 69 does, with 5 of the bucks being 200lbs. or more and worthy of being "put on the wall". I have always LOVED the sport of hunting, but it started to loose some of the EXCITEMENT and CHALLENGE it provided in those early years.
...then, one day IT ALL CHANGED...
I picked up a BOW and found that OLD FEELING AGAIN. I said, "Now bow hunting deer should be a REAL CHALLENGE..."

When I first started hunting, back in 1989, I had several things going against me. For one, I had NO IDEA what I was doing. As if that alone weren't enough, I'm also a WOMAN! Nowadays, women are becoming common place in the outdoors, but back then, there just wasn't that many lady hunters. It was just a short time before that when I met Danny. He was into the outdoors (we met while fishing with my brother) and I wanted to start hunting. After just a few trips and a lot of patience, Danny was able to help me harvest a NICE 7 point buck. It was as if I had started all over again...
I would drive several hours to various locations, most of the time camping out. Then get up early in the morning and get in the woods before daylight (sound familiar?), spend countless hours in a tree stand or on the ground, only to come home empty handed. It seemed that I was just "jinxed". Weekend after weekend me and my two buddies would head to the woods, only to have the same results.
The amazing thing was, I was SOOO close to putting it all together, I just didn't know how close I was. Those days were not all bad, as a matter of fact, must were very good! At the time, I didn't realize it, but I was gaining valuable experience (maybe I'm just a slow learner!) that would pay off down the road. The old saying "A bad day bow hunting deer is BETTER than a good day WORKING" was never so true. One thing I never considered was QUITTING!!! The HUNTING part is what makes it so CHALLENGING!!! Bringing home game, as we say down South, is LAGNIAPPE!!
A friend of mine, Matt bought a new bow set-up and proceeded to the woods with it...the very next day! When I look back, it's events like these that make me laugh. You see, Matt had what many would consider a GREAT day hunting. He had seven shot opportunities to take a deer that day! Heck, in the beginning I was doing good to have 2 or 3 shot opportunities in a season! Well, he made a "rookie" mistake by not practicing with his bow first (tip!) and ended up hitting everything but his intended target. There were arrows in trees, the ground, bushes...but not one deer down!
That being said, I was determined to not have another "5 year drought"
Things finally did turn around, and after makeing a few changes I harvested my first buck in 1994. Since then I've taken 5 bucks and 11 does while bow and arrow hunting. Every trip doesn't bring home game. HOWEVER, now I try to learn something NEW every time I step in the woods, so that they're all successful!
